Hello! Today has been a very long day! I woke up at 5 am, got ready, and was at the health clinic by 7 am. Sarah and I rode with the nurse/certified diabetes educator to the Inscription House Clinic which is about an hour from Kayenta. We spent the day learning about her job and sitting through the appointments with her and the patient. It was really interesting to see the clinic and how things worked there. They have doctors that come and go on contract so rarely do the natives have a consistent doctor. The clinic also had an urgent care center which was sort of like a mini ER with four bays. I was really looking forward to spending some time with the dietitian but she didn’t have any appointments today so I actually didn’t have the opportunity. It was still a good day though! I can’t believe the different mindset about time. Everyone is so laid back and never in a hurry. It’s a complete 180 from healthcare at home. It is actually refreshing to see the providers out here take their time with the patients. Inscription House is in a gorgeous location overlooking the rock formations. We had lunch outside and enjoyed the view. Not to mention the weather was perfect today! We left the clinic about 3:30 and made it home by about 4:30. We quickly changed our clothes and all headed to the senior center in Oljato, Utah for a “Just Move It” walk where we helped set up and volunteered as “safety patrol”. Haha. The view during the two and a half mile walk was stunning! We had a great time and met a lot of wonderful people. At the end of the walk they handed out T-shirts, fruit, drinks, and goody bags. They hold many different walks throughout the summer and they provide incentive to participate in all of the walks. The Just Move It walks have been going on for 16 years and itβs an attempt to get people out and exercising. It was awesome to see everyone from small children to elderly people walking. We just got home about an hour ago, ate dinner real quick, and now I’m getting ready to go to bed because we have another busy day tomorrow! We will be going to the Elder Fair and passing out the first aid kits that we brought with us. We will be sharing a table with Public Health Nursing Education. Tomorrow is also the flea market so I’m really excited to see some of the things that they will be selling as well as check out some of the local food vendors. π
The Public Health Nurses gave us a gift today which consisted of a really awesome bag that says Kayenta Service Unit/Inscription House, a water bottle, a pen, and Monument Valley t-shirt! It was so extremely nice of them and we were all really excited. Everyone I have met out here is so friendly and welcoming to the reservation. It’s refreshing to be around such positive people all the time. π Well I have to be at the clinic by 8 tomorrow so I’m going to bed. Goodnight!
